Glossary: CADE, AGU, MPF... How to translate the names Brazilian public bodies into English?

The daily routine of politics confuses Brazilian and foreign readers. Not only current events, but the administrative structure of the state itself can generate doubts in those who are not familiar with it.

It gets more and more confusing when we try to explain our political events in English. When we refer to positions, bodies, and proceedings, we need to keep in mind the specificities of the Brazilian government.

We must be especially careful when translating the names of Brazilian public bodies and agencies. Not only do we run into terms that don't work when translated literally (Ministério da Fazenda, Ministério Público), but certain bodies find no correspondence in other countries.

We have compiled below a brief glossary of names of public agencies, with a focus on control bodies and regulatory agencies. The translations were collected from public sources (mainly theataforma GOV.BR website) e adaptadas, quando necessário, para maior clareza.

For more information, check this Compilation of sources and references about Brazilian legislation in English.
